What I’ve Learned in My First 10 Videos

Some people say you just need to dig in and create 100 YouTube videos before you concern yourself with improvement and growth. I disagree, and think that with each video you make you should be looking for ways to improve.

At the time of this blog post, I’ve made just over 10 videos on YouTube, but I’m already noticing tons of things I can improve upon. If you’re a new creator, it’s important that you always think of ways you can improve your videos. Now, it definitely takes time to find your groove, but you can’t get to your groove without constantly improving. Anyways, here are my early observations about my channel – if you notice things I need to step it up on please let me know!

What’s the deal with TRAVEL VIDEOS?

YouTube is littered with travel videos these days. Both new YouTubers and pros love making them – but why? What’s the purpose or benefit of making a travel video? And why should YOU get comfortable making them? Let’s talk about it in my latest video!

8 Tips to Perfectly Mix Music & Vocals

Ever feel like you just can’t master the audio mixing in your YouTube videos? Here are 8 tips you can start using today to perfectly mix background music and vocals for any type of video project you’re working on – whether it’s a simple talking heads video, commercial or something else.

Note: This isn’t about mixing audio and vocals for a music track, this is about how you can improve your mix when adding a voice track over top of background music.

The Best Way to Safely Capture Credit Card Details Online

If you’re a freelancer or run a small business and are looking to capture credit card details online, there are tons of resources out there to help you do this. The two best inexpensive resources I use (and my clients use) are Stripe and Formstack. You’ve probably heard of Stripe, but you might not know what Formstack is (though the name kind of gives it away).

Stripe is a popular payment processor (like PayPal, for example) and Formstack is an advanced online form tool which allows you to safely collect credit card information from customers online. Why would you want to do this? Let’s say you own a restaurant and want to capture credit cards for RSVPs to prevent no-shows. Formstack makes that possible.

In today’s video lets dig into both Stripe and Formstack and learn about how and when to use each of them.

Get Started With FiLMiC Pro in 5 Minutes!

Recently I discovered FiLMiC Pro, an amazing video recording app available for both iPhone and Android devices. It truly unlocks your phone’s video-taking capabilities, and is so much better than the native video-taking app on your smartphone.

Entire feature-length movies have been filmed with FiLMiC Pro, and it’s the go-to app for countless short films, YouTubers, and video makers from all walks of life.

In this video, I dig into the basic functionality a beginner needs to understand in order to get the most out of the app. Check it out below!

Are You a Photo Taker or a Photographer?

I have an Instagram. You have an Instagram. We all have smartphones in our pockets that are capable of taking awesome photos. But we aren’t all photographers. In fact, I don’t think I’d even consider myself a photographer. I take photos. It’s not my profession, I can’t take consistently great photos (yet), and my Instagram isn’t bursting at the seams with awesome content.

So what about you? Are you a photographer, or just a photo taker? I want to get to the next level, and I hope you do too, but it takes a lot of time, effort, and grinding to get there. Check out my latest video below to learn more about what separates the pros from the amateurs (and subscribe if you aren’t already!).

What Can You Possibly Contribute to YouTube?

If you’re anything like me, the thought of starting a YouTube channel seems pretty daunting. I wasted a lot of time worrying about what content I wanted to produce, and always had excuses about why I hadn’t started. The biggest excuse I told myself was that there’s nothing I can possibly contribute to YouTube that’s any better than what’s already out there. What an awful way of thinking!

We all are our own people with our own unique personalities. I know it sounds cliche, but there’s something all of us can provide to the world that’s special and interesting. Now, not everyone will care, but some people will. There are billions of us on this planet – I guarantee there are lots of people out there who are like you and who would be interested in you.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that you can always create something better than what’s already out there. Just because there’s a popular cooking channel on YouTube doesn’t mean that you can’t start grinding and getting better and ultimately becoming better than them. And if it’s impossible to be better than them, at least you can be different. Unique. Original.

That’s all it comes down to. Being unique, original, and being yourself. Watch my latest video for more on this!

Is Peter McKinnon an Overnight Success?

Today we’re talking about one of my favorite YouTubers, Peter McKinnon. Peter started posting regular content to his YouTube channel just over a year ago and is already closing in on 2 million subscribers. He seems to have found the secret to growing fast on YouTube – but is he really an overnight success?

The answer is no. He has spent over 10 years working to get to where he is today. In my latest video, we look at Peter’s journey over the past 10 years with the help of the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine. Let’s see who Peter McKinnon was 10 years ago, and better understand how he positioned himself to get to where he is today.
